1950’s President’s Day
In the 1950’s, there was no President’s Day, the holiday as it is today generated out of the 1980’s when holidays were being reorganized and celebrated on the Monday closest to their actual dates. Therefore, during the Korean War era, the people of the U.S. had George Washington’s birthday to celebrate with family dinners, B-B-Qs and shopping for the best sales, whatever your heart desired. Harry Truman said good-bye and “I Like Ike” was sworn in as President. It was a great time to be growing up and for young WWII families that were just starting out…
Only today things seems to be like this……………

National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day
“…the wrong war in the wrong place at the wrong time.” _______ General Omar Bradley, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff
No single incident caused the catastrophic events that became WWII and the wars that sprang out of those six years also had their seeds dropped many decades before. Those of you that read my post “Setting the stage for war” at https://pacificparatrooper.wordpress.com/2012/09/14/setting-the-stage-for-war/ or have read the book, The Imperial Cruise by James Bradley, have an idea of which I speak. I could go back into history as far as Marco Polo, but I’ll spare you my rambling.
Teddy Roosevelt declared, “Our future history will be more determined by our position on the Pacific facing China than our position on the Atlantic facing Europe.” He was eager to see American strength spread across Asia just as it had gone across the North American continent. He also stated, “I wish to see the United States as the dominant power on the shores of the Pacific Ocean.” Though he knew very little of the Orient or its culture, he favorite motto – “Speak softly and carry a big stick.” – would cause a ripple that would grow into the tidal wave of conflicts still felt today.
I realize it is unusual to begin a section on Korea with the date that the war came to a close, but the calender of events is unavoidable.

Fun notes –
One year ago, the USS Mohawk CGC, a former WWII warship, was sunk off of Sanibel Island, Florida to become a new reef – but now – it will be an underwater art gallery! Austrian photographer, Andreas Franke, has installed 12 images inside the ship encased in steel-framed Plexiglas. Tiny marine organisms are expected to invade the frames and give each display a unique aura. To enhance the project, Franke has superimposed images of models in WWII clothing onto the original photographs that will remain on display until 14 September.
In 1943, the school year was cut short at Hillhouse High School in New Haven, Conn. due to the onset of WWII, the graduating class never had a senior prom. Anthony Pegnataro, 87, former class president, said,” They were dire days, but Americans toughed it out. A prom was the last thing on my mind.” But, 70 years was long enough to wait!! Class of 1943 finally had their prom!!
