U.S. Marine Corps Birthday – 10 November

What does the celebration mean to Marines across the globe?  To General John Lejeune it meant a great deal.  On 1 November 1921, he issued Marine Corps Order No. 47, Series 1921, which provided a summary of the history, mission and traditions of the Corps and directed that the order be read to every command each subsequent year on 10 November.

USMC Birthday Cake

At the Marine Corps Ball, one key piece of the ceremony is to present the first piece of cake to the oldest Marine in the room, who in turn gives the next to the junior Marine.  This symbolic gesture is the passing of experience and knowledge from the veteran to the recruit.  We should all emulate their example and take part in history.

To all those who are able – Enjoy the fruits of your labor and revel in the spectacle and unabashed camaraderie that is the U.S. Marine Corps!!

Current News – Charly Priest Review

As I explained to Charly Priest, I am the farthest thing from a poet that anyone could meet, but I am attempting a review of his Kindle/Paperback book.  I hope everyone bears with me.

Priest is an unusual sort, and his poetry bears witness to this statement, but he’s humorous, serious and down-right confusing at times.  There is no clearer explanation of him than that which is written at the end of the book by himself.

There are some that make you think, such as his poem “The Priest”, but I think he hunkers down and shows more of his true self in Chapter 4, and I was impressed.  Such as “Land of the Killers” you can hear his own experiences in the Spanish Legion during deployment.  “In Warfare”, that with all said and done, boils down to the last line, “where it’s a day-to-day reality of the insane.”

“Invisible People”, we’ve either known one of these or were one ourselves;  “Seven Sins”, he expresses the human condition as he sees it and “After the End” with great advice to all.

  4. The title of American Marine has always been the epitome of the America Military, the mere mention of Marine, evokes patriotism and Honor, I came across a few in Vietnam and I met them in awe.

    • haha, good old Tun’s tavern. I have a picture of my uncle standing in front of the replica in California on the USMC 200th Birthday. Whoa, I hadn’t realized until now that that was 44 years ago!!!

  9. I was born at Camp LeJeune. I rarely see anything written about Lejeune so this was a treat GP.

    Hoorah, Happy Birthday Marines!!

    • Although I know Camp Lejeune was around in WWII, I’m afraid I did not look into the history, except while preparing a post for the segregated Marines during that time. My son took basic training there and after getting his MOS training in San Diego, he came back to work on the Amtraks going to and from the first Gulf War.

  10. I saw the most touching thing today. I was driving through a town south of here, and saw a fellow sitting in a chair on a bridge with a Marine Corps banner flying next to him. At first I thought he was a single Marine marking the birthday, but farther on I saw many more people sitting alongside the road—and then, when I got the VFW hall, there was a sign out front that said “Happy Birthday”! Thanks to you, I put it all together, and knew which birthday was being celebrated. Thanks for all you do to keep us aware of these things, GP.

  28. Thanks for remembering the Corps’ birthday! That cartoon with “I heard your eyeballs move!!!” reminds me of me. I swear those D.I.s had eyes in the back of their heads. It’s been a long time since I vacationed at Parris Island. Funny thing, though — I’ve never had the urge to go back for a visit! 🙂 Semper Fi!

  31. Happy birthday for the 10th USMC! I have told in my blog, two of my high school friends went to the Marines after 9/11. Interesting history and tradition, never knew that from these guys. They did go to Parris Island I remember that, since they where from New York. Lost track of them. I wonder where are they now, hopefully alive, that is what´s important.
    Again, appreciate the review.

  32. Like the book review and the “Once a Marine” poster. Marine Corps is truly like the mafia–once in, never out–but they have totally different values. Will you do another Marine post on the Marine Corps birthday? (Mine is already written and ready to launch.)
