Veterans Day 2020 Remembrance and Gratitude
My post for this Veterans Day is dedicated to Sgt. Walter Morgan Bryant Jr., USMC; R.I.P my dear friend!
… there is an old Marine poem… it says: ‘When I get to heaven, To St. Peter I will tell, Another Marine reporting sir, I’ve served my time in hell.” ______ Eugene Sledge, USMC veteran of Peleliu & Okinawa

I watched the flag pass by one day.
It fluttered in the breeze
A young Marine saluted it, and then
He stood at ease.
I looked at him in uniform
So young, so tall, so proud
With hair cut square and eyes alert
He’d stand out in any crowd.
I thought, how many men like him
Had fallen through the years?
How many died on foreign soil?
How many mothers’ tears?
How many Pilots’ planes shot down?
How many foxholes were soldiers’ graves?
No, Freedom is not free.
I heard the sound of taps one night,
When everything was still.
I listened to the bugler play
And felt a sudden chill.
I wondered just how many times
That taps had meant “Amen”
When a flag had draped a coffin
of a brother or a friend.
I thought of all the children,
Of the mothers and the wives,
Of fathers, sons and husbands
With interrupted lives.
I thought about a graveyard
at the bottom of the sea
Of unmarked graves in Arlington.
No, Freedom isn’t free!!

The PH and the US have a love-hate relationship over the decades. But we have many things to thank the Americans for. I’ll mention a few–after our “ransom” from Spain, the establishment of the public school system and making education available to everyone, not just to the elite; the idealised urban plans by D Burnham (which me messed up, unfortunately) and; the many military servicemen/women who stayed behind (in their own capacity) to preach to us a truly spiritually-liberating gospel, set up Bible schools, and set up civic institutions that enriched our lives (I’ll mention Robert La Rue Stewart). Peace and blessings to you, GP.

The 11th Airborne Division still has contact and supports scholarships for the Los Banos school. I’m very proud of that.

That is truly kind. I should also mention that the American curriculum is world class.

It was certainly subdued but we did what we could under the circumstances.

What a lovely poem! Especially enjoyed the cartoon of the little girl asking why every day wasn’t Veterans Day. Thanks to all who served or are presently serving.

You’re welcome, GP. You mentioned on another blog post that he was a close friend of yours.

He was the type of person who was everyone’s best friend. He carried the motto of the Marines and his southern upbringing wherever he went. A true gentleman!
