U.S. Navy Birthday
The US Navy traces its origins to the Continental Navy, which the Continental Congress established on 13 October 1775, by authorizing procurement, fitting out, manning and dispatch of two armed vessels to cruise in search of munitions ships supplying the British Army in America. The legislation also established a Naval Committee to supervise the work. All together, the Continental Navy numbered some 50 ships over the course of the war, with approximately 20 warships active at its maximum strength.
In 1972, Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Elmo R. Zumwait, authorized recognition of 13 October as the Navy’s birthday. Not to be confused with Navy Day (the founding of the Navy Department), the Navy Birthday is intended as an internal activity for members of the active forces and reserves, as well as retirees and dependents. Since 1972, each CNO has encouraged a Navy-wide celebration of this occasion “to enhance a greater appreciation of our Navy heritage and to provide a positive influence toward pride and professionalism in the naval service.”
Although written by a Royal Navy Admiral in 1896, “The Laws of the Navy” began to appear in the US Naval Academy’s “Reef Points” Plebe Handbook and is still there today. The sketches were added by Lt. Rowland Langmaid R.N. during WWI.

GP,
I finally heard back from Sarah. Had an e-mail today. They have been busy, and struggling in grief, as you can imagine. 😦
She didn’t remember the details of her Dad’s military service. She said looking through his blogs would be the way to find out the info…so when I responded back to her e-mail just now, I told her you had done that. And that you had honored him in your Farewell Salutes. 🙂
She said she will be posting on his blog in the next week or so.
HUGS,
Carolyn

I’d like to look into my mother’s side of the family. I have her father’s citizenship certificate, but it only partly agrees with what is on a census I happened to find. When this blog is finished, I need to get my father’s WWII stuff together and categorized, plus whatever I’ve collected by then, for the National WWII Museum in New Orleans and then yes, I will get into some genealogy. I imagine that’ll be around mid-2020 – I hope.

Sounds like a good plan, G. Genealogy research is always like going on a treasure hunt and solving a puzzle. Will the museum feature your dad?

They are constantly updating, renovating and enlarging the museum, so I’m not quite sure just yet. I made these arrangements with the legacy curator back in 2014. I originally contacted the Pacific War Museum, but they would not take his ribbons, saying they had too many already, and I wasn’t about to split things up for various places.

I should do a bit of research then…..1775 The Marines. I just missed my history by one year so not all that bad. Which makes sense since the Marines enter into the “category” of Navy.

You tell Matt, the fact that he served is what counts. Every job is important in that long chain that leads to the front lines. He wore the uniform and took that time out of his life – THAT is the point!

Thank you, GP, for this post. As my father was a Navy officer in WWII and Korea, I appreciate the knowledge of the Navy’s heritage. Dad loved serving that branch for 23 years and, even later in the Reserves, enjoyed his time at sea.
One of my favorite stories in his WWII war notes: Following 2 bouts of Malaria in the Solomons, he was reassigned as Seamanship Instructor at the US Naval Reserve Midshipmen’s School, Notre Dame, where he served for the remainder of the war.
“We operated training craft out on Lake Michigan. Once dispatched to Jacksonville, Florida with several recruits, we took delivery of a 104-foot rescue boat. I sailed it down around the Florida Keys, west across the Gulf of Mexico, and all the way up the Mississippi and Chicago Rivers without the aid of a pilot. I enjoyed it immensely, as no one shot at us along the entire trip. It was my last fling as a Navy boat skipper.”

Oh, thank you so much for putting that story here, Karen!! As usual a hearty “tongue-in-cheek” remark comes from one of that generation! lol It always warms my heart to read one.

Had to Reblog this on eQuips. Thanks, GP! Did you ever read ADM Gallery’s books? One of his semiautobiographical books set during WWII talked about his time as CO of a jeep carrier. His sonarmen were listening for submarines. The lookouts on deck spotted two whales having an intimate moment. At that point one of the sonar techs piped up, “I hear screw noises.”
