Brig. General Henry Muller – 101 years and still going strong

Henry Muller

This article is derived from “The Voice of the Angels”, the 11th Airborne Division Association newspaper.

It’s not every day that a US Army veteran gets to celebrate surviving an entire century while also being informed of an induction into the exclusive hall of fame for his combat achievements. That is the case with US Army brig. General Henry J. Muller will belong to the Military Intelligence Hall of Fame.

On his 100th birthday, about 40  gathered for the occasion.  They sat under the oaks n the front yard and thumbed through a photo album featuring pictures from past celebrations.  The celebration included a birthday cake bordered with 100 American flags.

“There’s nothing that could warn the heart of an old soldier more than on his 100th birthday than to be surrounded with family, friends and good neighbors… I feel especially blessed.”

Among those there that day was US Army Capt. Antoinette Deleon, to interview him for his induction into the Hall of Fame at Fort Huacheua, Arizona.  “It’s an honor for me to come here…”

Bruce Henderson, author of the best seller, “Rescue at Los Baños: The Most Daring Prison Camp Raid of World War II”, said, “Just think about it, I mean even today if there was a raid like that saving that many lives, it would be big news.  He (Muller) went beyond his duties as an intelligence officer – it was the real human being in him.”

Brigadier General Henry J. Muller was inducted on 22-23 June 2017 for his service as a Lt. Colonel, G-2 of the 11th Airborne Division during WWII.

    • Thank you my friend for always being so supportive. As you’ve known for quite a while, all this means so much to me and to have friends like yourself actually interested in it too means a great deal – you’ll never know.

  6. One thing my dad always mentioned about the raid on Los Banos was the intelligence
that they had. That he said made the raid a success. Even the sand table looked
exactly like the camp when he stood in the door. Of the three jumps he made, Los
Banos the one he was most proud. Pass this on to the General if you can. Tell him
it’s from the son of one of the “Angels,” that jumped 23Feb45. 🇺🇸

    • I will do that, Bill. I thank you very much for stopping by to tell me about your Dad. The more I learn about the 11th Airborne during WWII, the more impressed I am. I never tire of hearing their stories.

    • After answering the comments this morning, I sent an email to the editor of “The Voice of the Angels”, the 11th Airborne Association’s newspaper and sent your comment to me about your father. This is what I just received back in reply…
“The latest voice just printed but I will certainly put this in the next issue. Thanks for sending it. You should be receiving the next issue in a week or so.”
So, your word to the General will be heard by all of the troopers, not just General Muller!!

  8. I see Gerard linked to the news about the USS Lexington. Here’s more information from Paul Allen’s site, with a terrific slide show. I especially like the fact that Allen pays tribute to the men of the Lexington and to the war effort in general, instead of tooting his own horn. I wonder if Gen. Muller has seen the news? I’ll bet he has!

  9. It’s a great achievement to reach 100 but very few serve their country to the extent that Brigadier General Henry J. Muller has done. By the way, Military Intelligence made me laugh out loud! (the axe one)

    • The 11th A/B and the POW’s of Los Banos are still very proud of Gen. Muller! We have a lot to be thankful for.
Sometimes you have to look twice to catch what the joke is that cartoon – it makes me chuckle every time I look at it!!

    • Thank you very much! If not for the General, the camp would have gone unnoticed for quite a while and the POW’s would have been killed. He deserves even more!!
