US Coast Guard 225th Birthday

Tomorrow, 4 August 2015 commemorates the 225th Birthday of the United States Coast Guard.
Congress authorized 10 vessels in 1790 to enforce tariff laws, prevent smuggling and protect the collection of federal revenue. Life-saving and humanitarian responsibilities were later added.
Today, the Coast Guard is a multi-mission, maritime, military service. Its mission is to protect the public, the environment and American economic interests in the nation’s waterways, along the coast, on international water, or in any maritime region as required to support national security.

Love that cartoon~! (Don’t let the NZ government see it—they may just think it’s a great idea) (and I don’t think the defence budget here would run to another bullet, not just yet).

The United States Coast Guard has certainly come a long way since 1790, a beginning with ten vessels, that now has expanded to being one of the most vital weapons of security for America.
Congratulations to the United States Coast Guard, and those who serve in Her.

So glad you posted this. We had the privilege and honor to live and work in Cape May, NJ where a Coast Guard training base exists. I worked at local PD and was always welcomed on the base to use the gym. Loved being so close to such a great part of our military.

Ballarat is about 500 metres above sea level. 1600 feet. So I can go on stuffing up the worlds climate and not give a damn.

Love the comics! 🙂 I’ll always remember the first year after 911. We were on “the Beast” on Galveston Bay (one of those fast tourist boats). They gave us red-white-blue spinners to hold as we darted across the bay listening to loud patriotic music. Suddenly the boat came to a stop (not typical of the Beast), and we were worrying that something went wrong when a Coast Guard helicopter appeared over us, at very low altitude. A couple guardsmen leaned out the helicopter to wave, and in return received a huge cheer from the tourists onboard. What a treat that was! Happy Birthday Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard never seemed to get “air time” the other branches have had over the decades. Their work is important. Nice post, GP.

Very true, Cindy, as a rule. However here in FL, 2 boys, 14 years old, went out fishing in the ocean – a storm hit – and the Coast Guard was on TV constantly answering media questions. Unfortunately, they had to cut off the search after 8 days. They had people out searching from Jupiter, FL up thru the NC coast and way out to sea – they deserve a lot of credit for going 24/7!!
