Thanksgiving during WWII…

They’re celebrating Thanksgiving on this very day,
My thoughts are at home, though I’m far away;
I can see everyone, eating dinner deluxe,
Whether it be chicken, turkey or even duck;
The fellows over here won’t whimper or moan,
They’ll look to the next one and hope to be home.

Truly and honestly, from way down deep,
They want you to be happy and enjoy your feast.
These holidays are remembered by one and all,
Those happy days we can always recall.
The ones in the future, will be happier, I know
When we all come back from defeating the foe.

  1. To all those who serve, have served or will serve, no matter which country they serve, today is Thanksgiving in the USA and I thank you all for fighting our wars, even when the enemy isn’t brave enough to show himself to you but hides in plain sight. Thank you all for keeping this world safe, keeping us free from oppression.
    GP you have a knack for making the tears flow, first with sorrow then with joy. Thank you for doing that.

  5. Such a rich post, GP, thank you so much. I really like seeing all the clips of T-Giv in the 40s for troops and folks at home. And the final comic (in the trenches) put everything in great perspective, as your post always does. My best to you and your loved ones for a Happy Thanksgiving. 😀

  10. Thank you for reminding us (or introducing, depending on the age) of Thanksgiving in a war zone.
    My book group just read The Postmistress, a novel set during 1941. The author calls it a book about war that did not take place on the battlefield. Sometimes a novel brings out the hard reality of war.
    Hope you enjoyed the holiday, and thanks always for never letting us forget. Sharing on my FB page

    • Ronald Reagan did not do combat service. He enlisted in the reserves in 1937 and once the US developed the Army Air Force, he transferred and went to the Public Relations Dept. (military movies, bond drives, etc.) Thanks for stopping in, John.

  34. So much to be thankful for on this Thanksgiving. My dad’s WWII service in the Coast Guard, My Uncle Lester’s in the Marines, Uncles Bob and Harley on their farms and my wife’s dad in the 8th Air Force. We should all remember that it wasn’t that long ago. And a good friend who was in Vietnam thought Thanksgiving was great because they got ice cream flown in. Not to eat, they soaked their feet in it!
