1940’s CELEBRATION WRAPPED AROUND A 1776 WAR SONG

HAVE A WONDERFUL DAY!!

HARK, hark the sound of war is heard,
And we must all attend;
Take up our arms and go with speed,
Our country to defend.

Our parent state has turned our foe,
Which fills our land with pain;
Her gallant ships, manned out for war,
Come thundering o’er the main.

fa-independence03

There’s Charleton, Howe and Clinton too,
And many thousand more,
May cross the sea, but all in vain,
Our rights we’ll ne’er give o’er.

Our pleasant homes they do invade,
Our property devour;
And all because we won’t submit
To their despotic power.

Then let us go against our foe,
We’d better die than yield;
We and our sons are all undone,
If Britain wins the field.

Tories may dream of future joys,
But I am bold to say,
They’ll find themselves bound fast in chains,
If Britain wins the day.

jly4.1940s

Husbands must leave their loving wives,
And sprightly youths attend,
Leave their sweethearts and risk their lives,
Their country to defend.

May they be heroes in the field,
Have heroes’ fame in store;
We pray the Lord to be their shield,
Where thundering cannons roar.

Current news –

Several military bases, such as Camp Lejeune Marine Corps Base and Fort Bragg Army Base, have had their Fourth of July celebrations cancelled due the failure of Washington to follow up on the 2011 budget pact. The additional spending cuts meant $85 billion across-the-board cuts that began in March. The military took a major hit and this was felt to be one way to scale back.

  1. Your blog is a great way for me to learn more about our own history, thanks for posting! I have several family members who were in WWII but they do not like to talk about their experiences so the only things I know are from my school textbooks…

  5. A company in Philadelphia offered to do do the Camp Lejeuene fireworks for free, and were turned down. Wouldn’t have cost the Feds a penny. The USMC won’t say who ‘they’ were that turned it down, but I think it’s a safe bet it was not anyone in the Corps, but someone over their heads.

  6. Thank you for publishing this fine old song. I poked around to see if I could discover anything more about it, but it appears that even in the 19th century no one knew its title or who had written it. What a good way to get back to what the Revolution was really like for people at the time! Loved the 40s visuals, too.

    • Thank you, Susan for dropping by and for investigating the song. I thought maybe I was missing something, somewhere, that I couldn’t locate the title. Maybe it was one of those ditties that units make up as they’re marching – who knows, but thanks for trying.

      • You’re welcome. You publish some very interesting materials in your posts. I did find an interesting old (1898) pamphlet online that gave the texts and origins of some other revolutionary songs. Apparently a man named Philip Freneau was one of the most prolific. . . . but the one you gave seemed more spontaneous than his. . . .

  7. Our community honors our veterans in a special way on the Fourth of July. At our City Band Concert in the open park pavilion, all the veterans, and those still serving, parade through the front of the stage while their branch’s song is played. It is a very stirring ceremony with the crowd on their feet and clapping to the music through all the branches. Even our courthouse is lit in red, white and blue for the holiday! We are a community thankful for those responsible for our freedoms.

    • That sounds absolutely wonderful – real ol’ time Americana. It’s fantastic to know that some cities still bother to express their patriotism and thanks. Thanks for telling us, Bev. Hope you had a terrific time yesterday.

  8. Very nice post, as ever. Hope you are enjoying this day and that you are kept safe from harm or danger should you be on the roads.

    **Personal thought regarding budget cutbacks affecting military bases’ celebratory events:
    It is to me, a shameful and most regrettable decision to forego festivities which allow the citizenry to partake in and exhibit pride in patriotism, on THIS, our country’s most significant day, commemorating our Independence and liberty for all. To call for this suppression of patriotic celebration, in the name of fiscal prudence for the well-being of the economy is reprehensible. It is most disturbing of all to expect such a sacrifice of the American People, while at the same time, the POTUS travels (at a tremendous taxpayer expense) extensively, to appear at political fundraising events.
    Thank you.

    • Thank you for your opinion, Mouse. I hope we don’t cut ourselves back to the point of leaving ourselves defenseless.

      • Yep. Remember when this war began and the equip was old (faulty Kevlar vests come to mind) and our kids went over there with bare necessities. I wish our leaders were REQUIRED to have served in the military prior to running for office. I really believe they have no clue, sometimes.

        • SOMETIMES? Politicians look at war from their desk tops and a career standpoint; humans actually getting killed doesn’t even fit into their equations.

          • I said that with absolute sarcasm, but tried to appear to give *some* of the leadership the benefit of the doubt. Didn’t want to rile anyone. You would be the expert, however, with your reply. And I wholeheartedly agree with every word. The current state of America has me in great concern for our future as we have folks in power who admit to passing legislation (Obamacare) without analyzing reading the terms or details beforehand. We have so many scandalous events occurring that originate from the highest posts and an entire administration who operates around the Constitutional checks and balances intended to limit and control the powers of each branch, in doing so they intentionally grant themselves authority they have no entitlement to; the administration refuses to address the questions of the People about events which have jeopardized national security or have placed our military & civilian personnel directly into peril, causing deaths of many of them. The times are unstable and we are allowing the POTUS to chip away at and deconstruct all the elements that made us a super-power to be reckoned with, in the eyes of the entire world. I pray the People’s will can be done and our national strength be restored. For now, though, I can only pray that this weakening of our country will not lead to our demise through works of terrorists or domestic tyranny. Above all I pray daily for those fine people fighting and dying in the defense of America, and that those returning without sound minds or whole, healthy bodies will be afforded all they need to return to civilian life and society — God knows we all owe them so much.
