US Marine Corps Birthday ~ 10 November 1775

What does the celebration mean to Marines across the globe?  To General John Lejeune it meant a great deal.  On 1 November 1921, he issued Marine Corps Order No. 47, Series 1921, which provided a summary of the history, mission and traditions of the Corps and directed that the order be read to every command each subsequent year on 10 November.

At the Marine Corps Ball, one key piece of the ceremony is to present the first piece of cake to the oldest Marine in the room, who in turn gives the next to the junior Marine.  This symbolic gesture is the passing of experience and knowledge from the veteran to the recruit.  We should all emulate their example and take part in history.

  4. The Marines have a great history and traditions to be proud off, I like that ceremonial handing over of Wisdom and experience via the Cake, we commemorated Remembrance day here on the 11th Nov as do many countries I think.

  5. Happy Birthday USMC!
And ever grateful for all our military on Veterans Day and EVERY day!
    (((HUGS)))
PS…I used to live near Camp Pendleton and I started (and planned, hostess-ed, etc.) a Mom and Kids group…we met once a week and had so much fun! The young Marine wives really appreciated the time to get together and talk and laugh while our kids played. 🙂

  6. GP thanks for this article for our Marines. I have a special place in my heart for Marines since I had 5 of my family members who served in the Marines and all of them fought in wars.

  7. Love the “MARINES” poster and “Leatherneck Humor” — I was in the Army, not the Marines, but the humor is equally applicable. The memory of sergeants yelling in my face still lingers in my ears more than 50 years later!

    • My uncle was a Master Sgt. in the Marines. My son (about age 7), asked him to ‘wake me up tomorrow like you do your men.’ Uncle Jim told him he didn’t do that anymore, but okay. I was at the kitchen counter the next morning and he asked – should I really do this? I told him my son asked for it, he wants it. I don’t think I ever so hard as that morning. My son exploded out of that bedroom, flew through the living room, sped down the hall to the side door and stood motionless in his ‘jamies wondering how he got there!! My son became a Marine as well. My father was an Army paratrooper and cousin a sailor. Thanks for stopping by.
