USMC Birthday | Veterans Day

US Marine Corps Birthday

10 November 2021 – The United States Marine Corps’ 246th Birthday

Prior to 1921, Marines celebrated the recreation of the Corps on 11 July with little pomp or pageantry.  On 21 October 1921, Major Edwin North McClellan, in charge of the Corps’s fledgling historical section, sent a memorandum to Commandant John A. Lejeune, suggesting the Marines’ original birthday of 10 November be declared a Marine Corps holiday to be celebrated throughout the Corps. Lejeune so ordered in Marine Corps Order 47:

11 November 2021 – U.S. Veterans Day

On November 11th, we pause to reflect on the history of this great Nation and honor all those who fought to defend it. Originally titled “Armistice Day” and intended to celebrate the end of World War I, “the war to end all wars,” Veterans Day allows us to give thanks to veterans past and present, men and women from all walks of life and all ethnicities, who stood up and said, “Send me.” We recognize your sacrifices, your sense of duty and your love for this country.

Remembrance Day around the world!

Remembrance Day (sometimes known informally as Poppy Day) is a memorial day observed in Commonwealth of Nations member states since the end of WWI, to remember the members of their armed forces who have died in the line of duty. Following a tradition inaugurated by King George V, in 1919, the day is also marked by war remembrances in many non-Commonwealth countries.  Remembrance Day is observed on 11 November in most countries to recall the end of hostilities of World War I on that date in 1918. Hostilities formally ended “at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month”, in accordance with the armistice signed by representatives of Germany and the Entente.

    • Thank you so very much for that, Lavinia. I was just telling someone last night about how you planted Michael’s tree and I showed them the series of pictures you’ve sent over the years. They agreed how wonderful an act that was (so of course I had to add about Derrick’s Michael as well!!) 🇺🇸

  14. I think it shameful that Remembrance ceremonies have been displaced from the 11th to the next Sunday…..for those who prefer that businesses should be able to continue, it might be salutary to remember that without those whose lives were ‘disturbed’ by having to go to waror they would have no business to run.

  15. Thank you, GP. I especially enjoyed the video of uniforms of each war. Did you know yesterday was the 100th anniversary of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier?

  16. I really enjoyed the film of all the different uniforms. I must admit though, I did struggle to recall what the Seminole and Nicaragua conflicts were about. And the “American Revolutionary War”, how did that turn out?

  17. As always, a wonderful post to remember our soldiers, GP. We fly the American flag everyday. 🇺🇸 Christine

  18. The flags went up around town last weekend, and our biggest tourist draw had special events last weekend to honor the military, and they’re also having events on the 11th. Best of all, they’ve put up a huge billboard honoring the military where it’s seen by thousands of people who pass by every day — it’s really quite wonderful, and a reminder to people who might not have a close connection to the services that they should pause and honor them, too.

  19. Children need to learn to honor the veterans also and their best example is their parents or grandparents. I have the cutest picture of a little boy trying to imitate his grandfather’s salute at a Veterans’ Parade but don’t know how to put it in messages.

  22. A wonderful post, GP! We have two dozen of those lawn flags that I told Matt yesterday to put on Wednesday in our front yard to honor the Marines on their birthday and keep them on Thursday for all the veterans. God bless them all and thank you for their service.

  25. Great post for both events, GP! Love the presentation of USMC uniforms throughout the wars and the remembrance and tributes to all branches who serve on Veterans Day. God Bless the man standing in his wheelchair who recognizes the devotion to Flag, Country, and Service, even if others do not!

  27. You covered all of the bases today, GP. I loved learning who was a Marine, a few surprises there… When I was at the Museum of the Marine Corps this summer, I gave one of the docents the benefit of my unsolicited opinion that I wished we currently had a few more Marines in Congress (both the House and the Senate) because we needed more politicians with principles (regardless of which side of the aisle they sat). Semper fi, GP.

  29. My respect to your Marine Corps, and to all the veterans who served in the US armed forces, GP. I expect our Remembrance Day commemorations will be on Sunday the 14th. They are always held on the closest Sunday to the 11th.
    Best wishes, Pete.

  30. Thanks for the poignant reminders, GP. We should remember every day, but especially this week. Maddie and I will be at the Veterans Memorial in the park in about 40 minutes. I’ll tip my hat to my dad, Smitty and everyone who has ever served (as I almost always do).
