18 MAY, 2019, BEING ANOTHER PART OF MILITARY APPRECIATION MONTH, IS CALLED ARMED FORCES DAY.

THE FIRST ARMED FORCES DAY WAS CELEBRATED 29 MAY 1950 (one month before the start of the Korean War).  ARMED FORCES WEEK BEGINS ON THE 2ND SATURDAY OF MAY AND ENDS THRU THE 3RD SATURDAY.  Due to their unique schedules, the NATIONAL GUARD & THE RESERVE units may celebrate this at any time during the month.

PRESIDENT DWIGHT DAVID EISENHOWER, 1953 –  “Today let us, as Americans, honor the American fighting man.  For it is he or she – the soldier, the sailor, the Airman, the Marine – who has fought to preserve freedom.”

If you do NOT normally fly your flag everyday, make this day one that you do!  Even a small one sitting in your window shows your heartfelt feelings toward our troops.

If you are not from the U.S., tell us about the days you honor your military in the fight for freedom – help us to learn by sharing.

Everett Smith served with the Headquarters Company, 187th Regiment, 11th A/B Division during WWII. This site is in tribute to my father, "Smitty." GP is a member of the 11th Airborne Association. Member # 4511 and extremely proud of that fact!

    Well done on your commemoration post gp, you never fail to pay respects in all your posts.
    I do appreciate all the cartoons you add, they really do demonstrate the mindset of the Soldiers at that time.

        It caught my eye because Gene’s wife and daughter appeared in the Pin Ups For Vets calendar a few years ago. I discovered that KISS are strong supporters of your military. They might be performers, but they understand who to thank for their freedom to perform.

    Just worked on an article about a local flag company tonight that makes three million US flags a year. There’s no excuse for us not showing the flag in support of our armed forces.

      I was very happy this morning. THEN – I hear that we are about to court martial a Silver Star recipient for something he was cleared of in 2015. Disgraceful. Someone needs a scalp to get a promotion I heard. I need to get more info and get a link to follow this through.

    In Canada, the remarkable men and women of our armed forces past and present are honoured on Remembrance Day, November 11. As with elsewhere, this 75th anniversary of D-Day will be the subject of special observances across the country.

    I’m not active on social media, but do follow some people on Twitter. Just for fun, I went over there to see if there were any posts about Armed Forces Day, and there were a lot. Some were from “just people,” but many organizations and businesses were highlighting the day, too — including the Milwaukee Brewers. One of the best posts that’s getting re-tweeted is a graphic showing the differences between Armed Forces Day, Veterans Day, and Memorial Day. I was happy to see that, and happy to see your post.

    We have quite a lot of celebrations of the 75th anniversary of D-Day coming up. To be honest, I don’t think many non-service people celebrate the actual armed forces day. That is mostly left until the Remembrance Sunday celebrations in November.

      They do Pete, if you go on the armed forces day website there’s loads of places get involved, Sunderland have the whole weekend with a parade on the sea front, big bands at night, stuff for the kids to do etc, very family oriented.

          Yeah I looked, not much going on in Norfolk especially near Beetly, but Lowestoft are givin it a good go– “Now in its 14th year Lowestoft Armed Forces Day is a free family day which always attracts good crowds showcasing the work of Britain’s Armed Forces. Attending will be regular and reserve units, cadet units, service charity and veterans associations stands. There will also be a range of arena events including military vehicles and the Cadet Unit Challenge makes a welcome return. Other attractions are a replica Spitfire aircraft and the Drumhead Service.”

    Our armed forces day (UK) is on the last Saturday in June each year, this year the 29th. There are over 300 events across the country as well as a D-day 75 veterans parade in Portsmouth.
