Special Issue – MAY – Military Appreciation Month
May, marked officially as Military Appreciation Month, is a special month for both those in and out of the military.
Not only do we pause on Memorial Day to remember the sacrifice and service of those who gave all, but the month also holds several other military anniversaries and events, including Military Spouse Appreciation Day and Armed Forces day.

Your dedication on behalf of our military is remarkable in its own way, GP. There were several items here that caught my attention, because I wasn’t aware of them. We’ve come to a point where people without family members in the military often don’t know what’s going on — or what is needed in terms of support. You’re doing a great service with posts like these.

Thank you, Linda. I try. The military veterans are sometimes too proud to ask for help, and they sure never ask for recognition. (if they do – be suspicious)

Like your idea of a Military appreciation Month, unfortunately we don’t have something similar here in Australia. Enjoyed reading through those great links gp, the story of the Silver Star award 51 years after Vietnam was great, Recognition after so long, definitely an award well earned.

When a hero finally gets recognized – we all win! At least that’s how I see it. We get to thank him (her) for their sacrifice.

Fabulous tribute and reminder post, GP! It appears that finally after such a long dry spell that our current administration is turning things around and getting behind these men and women! It’s a good feeling! 😀

It is good to see. I just wish people would give things a chance to work instead of doing nothing but complaining!

We should thank them every day of every month of every year…but I’m so glad there is the month of May for special appreciation! 🙂
Whenever I see veterans, or current military personnel, in public, I always go up to them and thank them.
Thank you, GP!
And thank you for sharing this post and all of the important links!

I appreciate that you show the individual vets their recognition too. I feel we owe them quite a bit and I’m excited to see others feel the same.

Great posts. I enjoyed reading the articles. I have fond memories of Memorial Day Parade in Oyster Bay. All our neighbors walked the half block to the main road and lined up to cheer those marching in the parade.
We all take a moment to honor these men and women of the armed forces for their sacrifice to protect our freedom. We also appreciate the military spouse for holding the fort at home. They deserve a whole month of appreciation.

While was dancing around the May Pole with nothing in my head, all of this was going on. I do not take a back seat. I was too young to know so I appreciate knowing now and sharing with the young ones who will know more because of us..

Maybe it was best you didn’t know at the time and you were allowed to have a childhood, Sheila. We give our thanks now as adults who understand what they sacrificed for us.

I saw a soldier in McDonald’s yesterday. I so badly wanted to go up and shake his hand. But I felt it might intrusive and embarrassing for him.
Now I regret I didn’t.

I first ask if they are a veteran (if they are not in uniform), when they say yes, I ask to shake their hand and I say Thank You. One time in Burger King, the man asked “For what?” I said – your service, sir. He teared up and said no one had ever thanked him before (it turned out he was a WWII vet.)

I think our country could have done a better job at diplomacy, at times in our history. But I doubt we’d be enjoying the freedoms we have, if it weren’t for our men and women in uniform. Happy Military Month, GP!
