Fourth of July
Red Skelton is amazing here – Please watch and have a happy and safe 4th of July!!
THE SOLDIER’S POEM
When this is over And we come home again, Forget the band And cheers from the stand; Just have the things Well in hand – The things we fought for. UNDERSTAND?_____Pfc C.G. Tiggas

ONLY A SAILOR
He’s only a sailor on the boundless deep, Under foreign skies and tropical heat. Only a sailor on the rolling deep, In summer rain and winter sleet.____Unknown
Remember when it was popular to be patriotic? We had fun back then!!
Please remember that fireworks can cause PTSD reactions. Please be considerate. Thank you.

I realize this is October, but this goes to show how far I’m behind in my emails. The point is our Pledge of Allegiance is good every day of the year.

So true!! Some people have forgotten that they pledged to this very flag and country every day. Some need to be reminded of.

You bet!
Someone from another country said he didn’t go to American sites on the 4th because of the sticky, gooey patriotism that pours out on that day.
I told him I was American and my site was sticky, gooey and patriotic every day and proud of it!!!!!

GP, this entire post touched my heart — the Soldier’s Poem especially. With liberty and justice *FOR ALL*! Wouldn’t it be a shame if someone said that “under God” made The Pledge of Allegiance a prayer, and that it would be eliminated from schools too?
Yes, it IS a shame – as are many things being done to dilute education, drip by drip, especially now.
So well done. I hope your 4th of July celebration was as meaningful as this post. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks. My barking pup and I hung inside for the day. He wasn’t fearful, thankfully, but he certainly was noisy! He’s my little ten pound protector.

The many college students in my ‘nabe were relatively respectful – confining the noise to the 4th. All’s quiet on the Eastern front today.

There are quite a few signs in yards in this walking neighborhood cautioning folks that a vet with PTSD lives there, reminding them to be considerate about loud noises – so I imagine awareness is higher than in many places.

That is very considerate and hopefully the concern will spread. With the condition of the VA for decades, homelessness and unemployment, veterans are the true ‘used and abused’ section of America. A situation like that is unacceptable.

I agree – and with enough Awareness I have to believe it can and will spread – forces for change. It is already changing in some places – like Clifton, where I live currently.

I’m getting over here a day late but I love your post! Aren’t we glad we grew up when we did? I know I am. It breaks my heart to see so many Americans fighting against their own country from within. They just don’t understand. But it truly warms my heart to see all of the people who love this country and band together to show it! Thanks, GP! 😀 ❤

Each person who chimed in for the 4th brought renewed hope for me, Linda!! You hear some many complaints these days – what ever happened to that world we once knew? Like Jacqui Murray said – “I want that world back!”

I saw Red Skelton in ’83 (?) I think it was. Funny beyond compare. 😅 I may be an exception but I don’t want those days of bigotry, of institutionalized racial and religious bias back (50’s). I think they should teach history and civics for sure but again, not the propagandist versions I was exposed to between ’56 and ’68. I think the school systems decided to drop those as opposed to teaching truths. I am gratefully American and I want our country to fully embrace the ideals, not the words, of the constitution and federalist papers. (I still think Lincoln was our best president) ☺ Whew! A long response for me.

I understand many schools, especially the higher learning, are cutting out History altogether. You can’t learn from something you don’t know.

Agreed. I remember how bad a job they did though, how sterile it was. Learning names and dates is not history, it’s just memorization. History is interesting, as is your blog. Schools did not teach history this way, unfortunately. They did not have a balanced approach. Yes, we should teach history in schools, legitimately.

I guess I was lucky. I had teachers like that, but my 6th grade teacher, Mr. Kehoe, made things interesting, as did my father. So much so that I was about that age when I read “The Naked and the Dead” by Norman Mailer.
