Happy Flag Day! The Evolution of the American Flag [Video]
To coincide with previous discussions on a country’s changing flag… THIS EXPLAINS THE USA !!! And Happy Birthday to the ARMY !!!
Today is Flag Day, an annual observance of the Second Continental Congress’ official adoption of the stars and stripes in 1777. At the time, they “resolved that the flag of the 13 United States” be represented by 13 alternating red and white stripes and the union by 13 white stars in a blue field, “representing a new constellation.” Now, more than 200 years later and with an updated design, the flag is an American icon.

I sincerely wish that when one means History, Growth, or Development, those words ought to be used, NOT D****d “Evolution”. There IS a God, He works proactively in our lives, and that word should be stricken from the language of those who believe. Otherwise a fine article on the HISTORY of the American Flag.

Thanks for the explanation of the symbolism of the red and white stripes, have never thought about its symbolism but knew it must have relevance.

Oh, we always have a reason – just sometimes it isn’t so smart! 😈

This has particular resonance with me. My wife is from Minnesota and we recently found out that we are going to have our first baby. On my way to CVS, I looked up at the Flag of the United States of America and felt truly proud. My child will be an American, I’m just waiting for my visa to clear and I can’t wait to move to a wonderful country with such wonderful people. Thank you so much for your post. Great to see the evolution of the flag. As we discussed, a flag should reflect a nation’s development.

Yes. Also because I haven’t studied US history I hadn’t realised until seeing this video, how long it took for all the states to be united under one flag.

Yes, we take for granted that we have always been here. By forgetting our history, we also forget how tenuous our future can be. [I remember when they added Alaska and Hawaii too – YES, I’m THAT old…]

Yes, we forget how easy it is to unravel!

I would say that, like the Union Jack, it has become an international icon. It is a pity Africa chose to throw history away when adopting new flags. At least the SA one is distinctive.

Now, isn’t THAT an idea. Why don’t you make a post for all the flags used for your area. I’m sure we could all use the added education.

It was a great idea, but a bit late. Maybe next Flag Day!

Sometimes I think we have too much freedom – some people tend to include the freedom to forget everything that made this country so great. And it’s this attitude that is helping us to take a nose dive. I hope you’re right, Tina, and many will watch this video. Thank you.

The sad part is, few actually know where they have come from, how much has sacrificed for them, and how much is still sacrificed them. Old adages have withstood the test of time because they are true. “Those who do not learn their history are doomed to repeat it.” All great nations in history have imploded making them weak to scavengers nipping at their borders. People cannot see past their own personal needs any longer. They are fed spinets of history taken out of context and led to behave in a way that weakens the nation. I always taught my students that history really does not repeat itself, for God has a linear plan, but humans refuse to learn from their mistakes and keep making the same ones over and again. If people do not want to be led around by the rich and educated then they need to get their butts busy and learn. Blessings upon you!

I could not have said all that so eloquently, Tina, so thank you. The WWII generation had gone through the Depression also, so when the war was over and the country was having a boom – they started raising families and saying – ‘I want my child to have it better, [easier, have more, etc.] than I did. From one decade on down to the current one, we now are left with spoiled, lazy people who think reading a book is too much trouble….. in other words – I firmly agree with you!!

Let us pray it will not take another world conflict to wake the mindless. Alas, I do not believe that will be the case as we are in the birth pains of the next war.
