gp, I am warmed that your Memorial Day tribute certainly honors those who gave their lives but also those includes those who served & lived to see the benefits of their sacrifice in a free America. That has always been a foggy aspect of Memorial Day….the living for whom Veterans’ Day is dedicated. I think it right to include the deceased & the living Vets on Memorial Day. It is what is in our heats & minds this Day. Phil

Maybe the ultimate sacrifice deserves it’s own day for honor and respect. IMO

I do not wish to mis-lead you. I am in the background, the website is dedicated to my father, Everett Smith (Smitty) and his unit, the 11th Airborne Division. My father, son and uncle served but are no longer with us. Thank you for coming by, please come again and spend a little time with our little group. The readers talk to each other as well as me, share stories, etc.

I thank you as well for all you do to support the troops. Your posts and photos show the respect and honor expressed in San Diego. [My son took his USMC MOS training there].

I recently read something sent to me by Mustang_USMC that helped gel my lost feelings together. As I’ve tried to express in my stories, Memorial Day is just that: a day to reflect and honor in your heart those that did not come back. On the other hand, they physically did not come back…but those that did carried deep scars for the rest of their lives. Perhaps their souls should be reflected upon also “during” Memorial Day weekend… and as always, I will enjoy my cigar because those being honored allowed me that choice.

Very true, Koji. In some ways I agree. They’re minds and bodies have been forever altered by their service, but on the other side of the coin – they are part of Veteran’s Day. I understand what you’re saying, but I’m torn as to the answer. Sorry pal.

Indeed, the vets are part of Veteran’s Day… I just feel sad that many – like your dad and Old Man Jack – may have left something very precious to them out on that battlefield, never to be retrieved…

Oh, you know they did, Koji – but they wouldn’t tell us what.

As I told Curt, I always feel as though I come up short on showing enough for the troops – hence a prelude and actual Memorial Day post. Thank you for coming by, Jacqui.

I agree with you Everett, that some people tend to forget the real reason. I was reading about our town, Oshkosh and while they have a parade they also scatter ashes of fallen soldiers. There is also a small wall memorial in town. Have a safe holiday!

It does my heart good to hear what Oshkosh does for the memories of these troops. Thank you very much for sharing that with us, Kathy.

Thank you, Ann. The picnics get in the way sometimes, they forget this is not a happy holiday but a solemn one.
