And memories…

memorialday_02

I believe I need to add here that this is officially a celebration for Washington’s birthday even though the name was changed to President’s Day in 1971.  Congress voted NO to including Lincoln and the rest of the presidents simply jumped on board anyway!

This is the Tateyama Kurobe Snow Corridor in Murodo, Japan.  They receive approximately 21′ of snow per year, but there have been times when 60′ fell.  The Corridor can only be open April thru October, so these pictures are not even in the winter!

  2. How funny. I saw this post last year and commented that I would stay in my warm weather. Sigh…. maybe that was my first mistake! LOL! I also didn’t seem to register that they failed to include Lincoln because I thought President’s Day was a combining of Washington and Lincoln. Go figure. You teach me all the time!

THAT is a LOT of SNOW! I couldn’t imaging living in a place like that. I will think twice about complaining about our snow. 🙂

  4. Even as a girl back in the 70s, my school still did both Washington’s and Lincoln’s birthdays separately. I didn’t realize that law passed in ’71, I thought it happened much later than that!

  6. We need to respect those in Authority over us, God tells us to pray for them and to obey the Laws of the Land that they put in place, as long as they don’t go against His guidelines and Authority in our lives but when they do we are to reject them and vote against those who endorse them, evil brings evil and is the absence of Love.

    • I vote according to my own conscience and I have a copy of the Constitution of the US – and fail to see how our politicians can state with a straight face that they are all following it, but I digress. Washington did the job of president, despite not really wanting the position and Lincoln was glorified for be killed, as a few others were. Yes, freeing the slaves was most important, but HOW he did it – well I just don’t think he thought it through – all those people hitting the cities in hopes of jobs and a better life and finding that the towns just could not accommodate them caused havoc that is still going on today. Take care, Anne, thank you for coming and sharing your opinions.

      • Our consciences are God given gpcox if people continually do what is wrong or reject Him, they will become hardened and their consciences will no longer promote them to do good or warn them when they do evil, in a sense they will die spiritually to what is good, perhaps this is what has happened with some who are in power. Also those who reject God’s Truth, only welcome what they will accept even without confirmation that it is Truth and they reject Truth even with confirmation that it is, God says they have itching ears.

His way is always the right way and so man will reap the evil they sow and they will be without excuse because His reality is clearly seen in His Creation.

        Blessings – Anne.

  12. Ah, yes, I do remember back when the two Presidents’ birthdays were celebrated independently. I can’t begin to imagine that kind of snow. I’ll keep myself in the sunshine, thanks much! I do love these vintage cards, etc. 😀

  13. Some will never forgive Lincoln, just as some will never forgive Franklin Roosevelt. I suspect some were more than happy to stop his birthday celebration. Sometimes I do wonder, though I know all of us hold certain perceptions that may not be fair or accurate.

Except…..I lived in the Atlanta area for many years, and no one ever celebrated Lincoln’s birthday there….as they would say there, NOT NEVER….I mean, before the celebrations were combined, that is….and of course, this was for the obvious reason of the War between the States as some were still calling it even in the late 1970’s!

    • Actually, Catherine, if you’ll note in the bottom of the post, under the ‘American Idol’ picture, I’ve clarified that President’s Day is NOT a combination – it is only for George. It was proposed to Congress to add Lincoln, but was voted down. The other presidents these days just hop on the band wagon like they belong there.

We have lost something special by not honoring them separately I believe… Presidents day doesn’t have the same cachet…..

    • No, it does not. People keep imagining that Pres. Day is for all of them or is a combination of Lincoln and Washington – which it is not. Thanks for reading here awhile.

  17. Nice post. I had a nostalgic memory over the weekend of my mother baking a cherry pie annually for Washinton’s Birthday and then President’s Day. It inspired some baking on my part this weekend. Cardealerships used to serve up cherry pie on Presidents Day Weekend for their big sales. I wonder if any still do that. Cheers

  18. As our parents or grandparents saw it, GP? Hmmm. It’s how I saw it growing up. I, for one, still believe that Washington and Lincoln deserve separate days given what they did for our country. –Curt

  20. I also remember when it was 2 separate holidays but don’t feel old. Sounds like Pierre and you like getting up early. Always been a night owl so sleep later. Sure enjoy the coffee in the morning like both of you! Love the “True American Idol”. Sure is true, Everett.

  21. I was trying to remember what year they were combined? It must have been late ’60s/early ’70s? I remember them being separate when I was in elementary school, but my wife, at seven years younger has no recollection of it.

  22. What fun it was to see these! Changing times – most see this as merely a 4-day weekend, and I must confess to some guilt as few of us bother to blog about why we denote a President’s Day. But I do give thought and thanks to leaders who gave their best to our country.
