Veteran’s Day

Always a Soldier!!

Always a Soldier!!

“FOR TOO LONG, TOO MANY OF US HAVE PAID SCANT ATTENTION TO THE SACRIFICE OF A BRAVE FEW IN OUR MIDST.  IT IS UNHEALTHY FOR A NATION TO BECOME DETACHED FROM THOSE WHO SECURE IT.”_______Howard Schultz, author of For Love of Country

I first want to give my personal THANK YOU to each and every veteran that fights for peace and freedom!!!  I tear up and become speechless at the mere sight of any one of you!!  Boo-ya!!  Here in the United States of America we do our best to convey our gratitude to these men and women for giving so much of themselves for our safety on this day.  In such nations as: Canada, New Zealand, Australia, England, India, Mauritius, South Africa and many in Europe, a day set aside is called Remembrance Day and was recently observed.

FREEDOM IS NOT FREE

by: Cadet Major Kelly Strong, Air Force Junior ROTC, Homestead Senior High, Homestead, FL 1988

watched the flag pass by one day,
It fluttered in the breeze.
A young Marine saluted it, and then
He stood at ease.

looked at him in uniform
So young, so tall, so proud,
With hair cut square and eyes alert,
He’d stand out in any crowd.

thought how many men like him
Had fallen through the years.
How many died on foreign soil?
How many mother’s tears?

How many pilot’s planes shot down?
How many died at sea?
How many foxholes were soldier’s graves?
No, freedom is not free.

I heard the sound of Taps one night,
When everything was still.
I listened to the bugler play
And felt a certain chill.

I wondered how many times
that Taps meant “Amen,”
When a flag draped a coffin
Of a brother or a friend.

I thought of all the children,
Of the mothers and the wives,
Of fathers, sons and husbands
With interrupted lives.

I thought about a graveyard
At the bottom of the sea
O unmarked graves in Arlington
No, freedom is not free.

CURRENT NEWS –

The true story of WWII hero, POW, and Olympic athlete, Louis Zamperini who recently passed away 2 July 2014, has his life depicted in Laura Hillenbrand’s best seller, Unbroken, will be coming to the big screen, 25 December.

Did you know? – One of most inspiring anthems, God Bless America, sort of has a birthday – Irving Berlin wrote an earlier version in 1918, but the one we hear today was first performed on 11 November 1938, in a radio broadcast by Kate Smith.  The song eventually became her theme song.

  1. Thanks for your recent comments on our blog posts. All five of my brothers served during WW 2 and thankfully all came home again. My mother later received a letter from Secretary of Defense Forrestal thanking her and the family for service to our country. And thanks to you for your honorable service. – CHRIS

    • I thank you for your family’s service as well. But I do not wish to mislead you, Chris. My father, son and uncle served. My dad, Smitty, didn’t put his foot down very often, but when I told him I was going to enlist – a flat-out NO came out. So, here I am so many years later trying to help keep the memory alive of all those that DID serve. Thanks for visiting!

  2. Wow that poem really hits the heart…and makes the eyes water…
Bless them all, past and present, living and dead…and prayers for the wounded and broken souls who came home to less than they deserved for the sacrifices and sufferings they bravely offered…

  7. Thanks for a great Rememberance post gp, the majority of the western worlds stand united in respect of our great Hero’s, the saddest part about Rememberance day each year, is that we seem to have new monuments, and new fallen, to Remember each year.
War is the eternal curse on mankind.

    • You are so right, Ian. I cringe every time I hear of even one more soldier leaving anymore – it is all so endless. But, as long as power and money are in the mix – politicians will continue to find a reason.

  14. I enjoy your blog. Today, I happened to notice that the wives of several friends posted Facebook pictures of themselves with their husbands in uniform. A combat Viet Nam veteran when service was not often honored, I appreciate the thanks I saw in so many places today. But I also thank my wife and all the other wives who waited at home wondering each day if their husband was OK. They don’t get the recognition but in their own way they are vets too.

    • Very true, but we did recently have a Gold Star Mothers post and November IS Military Family Month, so they do get some recognition. I too was a family member, so I definitely understand.

I was so trouched by the Poem, “Freedom is not Free”. The depth of truly understanding and conveying those heartfelt into “every day” words is so beautiful.
I loved this entire post, and the “humor” part.
God’s continued Blessings for all of our Military, both past and present.

  17. Do you know who created the picture at the top (the old man with the young warrior shadow)? I teach Photoshop to 8th graders, teach how to create shadows, and always use a project with an alter-ego. This is perfect, but I want to give proper credit.

    Any ideas? Thanks, GP.

  19. It is a terrible world that needs soldiers. But it would be so much worse without them. They are a treasure and we spend them too easily.

  20. I agree that we should honor them year-round but especially today. I love Kate Smith signing God Bless America and it should be the standard theme. Great post, Everett!

  23. That first photo brought me to my knees. We civilians are definitely too far removed from military families and experiences. I think there would be many benefits to our nation ofre-instituting a draft requiring military or civilian service.

Veterans Day should be every day, not just 11/11. I’m posting the resources because it has articles with 100 and 101 ways to say ‘Thank You’ to vets. Also, if anyone has a website or blog strictly about veterans I would be honored to add them to the resources page.

  35. A very sad day indeed but I don’t know if the young ones care so much now. Once upon a time everyone stopped what they were doing at 11am when the bugle sounded. People stopped in the street, they stopped talking and bowed their heads, tradesmen downed tools and so on. The Last Post always give me goosebumps. I hope we never forget.
I love the quote and the poem by the way.

    • Thank you very much, Norma. I agree and that is the reason I included the quote. We are far too detached from the troops who keep us in the lifestyle to which we have become accustomed. Thank you for everything!
