239th U.S. Marine Corps Birthday

Marine motto

What does the celebration mean to Marines across the globe?  To General John Lejeune it meant a great deal.  On 1 November 1921, he issued Marine Corps Order No. 47, Series 1921, which provided a summary of the history, mission and traditions of the Corps and directed that the order be read to every command each subsequent year on 10 November.

At the Marine Corps Ball, one key piece of the ceremony is to present the first piece of cake to the oldest Marine in the room, who in turn gives the next to the junior Marine.  This symbolic gesture is the passing of experience and knowledge from the veteran to the recruit.  We should all emulate their example and take part in history.

  2. Thanks for noticing my blog. Did you notice the US Marines flag in the photo of Old St Paul’s (Wellington, New Zealand) in my ‘Wellington as capital city’ post? Hidden behind it is a 1942 US flag – these were left by departing US marines after WW2. This website has more about the US Marines/NZ connection: http://marinenz.com/

  9. On the 3rd July 2008 I attended an Independence Day concert in New York, and during the program the NY Philamonic played some military music and I recall when they played some Marine Corp hymn I believe it was, several men scattered throughout the audience rose and stood to attention, during the playing, it was quite a moving experience,

They were obviously ex-marines Is there such a thing as an ex? and it seemed that what they did was the most natural thing for them to do.

  12. This is a link to my father’s grave stone. He was in the Pacific during WWII, but didn’t talk much about it. I have seen photos of him with marine buddies, and even one with a monkey he kept as a pet overseas. I heard a story once about the monkey rifling through everyone’s personal items.
