The cover is an amazing combination of humor and seriousness. The photograph is very intense.

The cover does seem like it comes from a more innocent time (even in war time). I wonder how the soldiers responded to it.

According to my father, they were excited to get ANY word from the outside world. Magazines, newspapers, letters from home were all gold.
